Smart Home Devices: Control Water Consumption

Whether it’s playing your favorite music, turning off the light, closing the garage door or keeping your home secure, smart home devices make it easy to automate your life. However, there are also instances where they can help you save energy and money. Even if you’re not a tech-whiz, you may already have a few “smart” appliances or devices in your home, or likely know someone who does. But while these devices are growing in popularity, it’s also important to learn the advantages and disadvantages to determine whether a particular smart device is right for you. Previously, we looked at smart thermostats, smart lighting, and smart plugs/power strips. Lets now check out some options to help manage home water consumption.

Smart Water Consumption Devices

Being mindful of water usage – or the energy needed to heat it up – is not easy. Smart home devices that help manage water consumption have become increasingly popular as people seek to reduce waste and lower their water bills. These devices monitor and control water usage in various parts of the home, such as showers, faucets and sprinkler systems. A few examples of smart home devices available include showerheads, sprinklers, faucet attachments, leak detection devices and much more.

Pros:

  • Shower systems allow you to program temperatures and set limits.
  • Smart sprinklers save water thanks to scheduling functions and improved fixtures.
  • Leak monitors can help monitor under sinks, behind toilets, around washing machines, etc.

Features to Consider:

  • Real-time alerts or audible alarms in leak detectors
  • Scheduling options for outdoor sprinklers
  • Showerheads with integrated cleaning functions

Cons:

  • Although inexpensive detectors can warn you about leaks, they do not shut off any supply to mitigate a leak. Devices that will shut off are much more expensive.

  • Smart showerheads may require more thought in bathroom design, depending on placement and pipe locations.

  • If a repair is needed, there may be confusion about whether to contact a plumber or an electrician.

Popular Brands:

  • Roca Smart Shower
  • Moen Flo Water Valve
  • Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler system
  • Phyn Smart Water Sensor

Whether you're looking to save on energy bills, reduce waste, or simplify your daily routines, smart home devices have something to offer everyone. The benefits of integrating smart home devices into your living space are numerous; however, the positives won’t always outweigh the negatives in every situation. It's essential for homeowners to weigh the pros and cons, considering their individual needs, preferences, and circumstances.
